Hickman Roundabout & Pedestrian Undercrossing Improvement Project
Project Update: August 28, 2023
This project has reached official "Substantial Completion" and is progressing to the final steps of completion. Thank you all for your patience and understanding during this major street infrastructure improvement project. The City is currently working on construction plans and a grant application to construct new trails on the west and east sides of 68th Street that will connect to the new pedestrian underpass.
Project Update: July 13, 2023
The pedestrian underpass retaining walls are currently being installed to push this project into the Final Completion stage!
Recent meetings with the contractor placed a target date of July 26, 2023 for the project's final walk-thru. City officials have requested that Prairie View Lane be open before the annual Hickman Hay Days celebration.
Project Update: June 9, 2023
68th Street north of the Roundabout will be closed on Tuesday June 13, 2023 to complete asphalt milling and repaving that was damaged during construction of the underpass.
The road will be closed down very early Tuesday morning and ready for live traffic by evening.
Project Update: April 26, 2023
Good news!
South 68th Street is OPEN to vehicle traffic today! The contractor placed temporary pavement markings, seeding and matting the areas along the roadway, set up temporary traffic control and performed site clean-up.
Please note that there will be intermittent closures of the roundabout intersection and South 68th Street in the next few months for the contractor to complete the remaining project items. Prairie View Lane will remain closed and pedestrian access restricted until the project is fully completed.
As work continues, drivers are reminded to please drive slowly and with caution through the work zone.
Project Update: March 31, 2023
The contractor has made good progress on the box culvert underpass even with considerable weather issues and existing utility setbacks. The new 10” water main and backfill of the culvert underpass are complete. Asphalt paving is currently scheduled to begin today. South 68th Street and Prairie View Lane will remain closed into April for the contractor to safely complete all remaining substantial work items. This includes the retaining wall, trail paving and other incidental work. Our top priority is worker and driver safety and getting the street open as soon as possible.
We appreciate your patience and understand the frustration for many of our residents and visitors. We have had lots of positive feedback on the roundabout and are very grateful that is open and operating smoothly. Remember that these are significant infrastructure investments for a community such as ours and these improvements will benefit so many of us for years to come. Please continue to drive safely and slowly through the area.
Project Update: February 22, 2023
The City received an updated project schedule for the Hickman Box Culvert and Trail Crossing. The schedule has a projected opening date to traffic of March 18, 2023.
The handrail has been installed on the Roundabout sidewalk on the west side, so the sidewalk will now be open for public use.

Project Update: January 26, 2023
The Pedestrian Trail Underpass construction is underway; however, due to weather, poor soil conditions are hindering the project. A water main is being replaced in this location before placement of foundation material and the box culvert. The City’s contractor continues to work diligently. Construction on South 68th Street is anticipated to be approximately 60 days. Thank you for your patience and continued support. This will be a great addition to our city’s trail system!
City officials of the Parks & Trails Committee have recommended connecting the underpass to a new pedestrian trail on the west side of 68th Street going to the south behind Dollar General and connecting with Hickman Road.

REMINDER - Road salt cannot be used during the first year. Use caution and be mindful of weather conditions when traveling through the new roundabout.

Now that the Roundabout is open, we're moving on to the final phase of the project!
South 68th Street Closure in Hickman
Weather dependent, South 68th Street at Prairie View Lane in Hickman will be closed beginning Monday, January 9 for construction of a box culvert for a future pedestrian undercrossing. During construction, access to all local businesses will be maintained.
Through traffic traveling around Hickman should use the marked detour on 54th Street, Roca Road, 82nd Street and Panama Road.
Construction on South 68th Street is anticipated to be approximately 60 days.
